Default Atf+4 and Dexron III

Okay guys im in sticky situation here. Whenever i put my new transmission in i filled it with atf+4 and i found out i had a leak and it leaked most of it out. I was looking in my tool box and found 2 brand new bottles of Dexron III. I dont get paid for a few more days and cant afford to go get more atf+4 at the moment. I was wanting to know if its ok if i pour the dexron III in with the atf+4. Theres its hardly even showing on the dipstick. I honestly dont think it is at all. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Was the fluid hot when you checked it with the dipstick? I would not add a bunch of fluid unless you know for a fact that the fluid is way low.

In any event the ATF+4 and Dexron III are compatible. The basic question is why you are using the ATF+4 to begin with.

Right - Dex III is the fluid you want.

Well, At the moment we had just got the transmission in and i was in a hurry and ready to drive it and couldnt figure out what fluid to go in it so i called up the part store and thats what they gave me. But i checked it when it was hot and it was barely on it then checked it this morning and it was the same way. Could barely tell it was on there. Like i said i dont even think there was any on it. I just think its from me pulling the dipstick out and it rubbing on the sides.

The proper way to check the fluid is at hot idle (yes it needs to be spinning internally). Make sure you steer clear of the fan...

Indeed Dexron III/Mercon compatible is what you want. Not ATF+4. Chrysler has a habit of superceding the fluids specified by the original manufacturer with something that they can get for very cheap. Several out-of-warranty transmissions are "supposed" to use fluids that were never specified by the folks that actually made them.
