Anyone run Rotella T 10w-30?
Hey Guys,
Anyone run Rotella T 10w-30?
Found a case of 3, 1 gallon jugs at Menards for $33 so, I picked it up.
I have seen Rotella T 15w-40 and synthetic 5w-40 discussed but not 10w-30.
My current fill is Chevron 10W-40 which the Jeep seems to hate. Over the past 200 miles on the chevron fill, the engine has become "chattery" or "sloppy" sounding. The PO had it filled with Valvoline 5w-30 and it sounded fine on that. Jeep is a 97 Cherokee 4.0, 159K miles.
Just looking for your experiences.

How was oil pressure with the 30? Does it leak/burn oil?
As far as your question the stuff you picked up is 30 weight so it should be fine if your engine runs good with that. All of my 4.0's that I have had like 40 weight better. If I'm not mistaken the Rotella has ZDDP. As do others.

if you are in a state that has emissions testing
you my not want to run it
its an oil designed for diesel engines and has something in it that can make you fail

When I picked up the Jeep 3 months ago it was still on its winter fill of Valvoline 5w-30. Oil pressure was good, 40 running down the highway and 15-20 @ idle. Engine seemed quiet while driving down the road, no engine noises, doesn't burn any oil or coolant etc.
Switched to a 10w-40 (Chevron) just because I could and because of others experiences on this site. I believe the 10w-40 actually made the Jeep more noisy! When I am running down the road now, and at idle, I can hear valve chatter or something chattering around in the engine.
I know these are noisy engines by design, I just don't recall it being this noisy when I first bought it ( I've only driven it 350 miles) .
I have tried two different oil filters, a WIX and a Mopar, same result. Thought maybe it had something to do with the engine noise.
Being the Rotella is a HDEO, I am hoping the extra Zinc and additives will help with engine wear and noise.

Just found that Rotella T has about 1200 ppm of zinc, great for our engines. A normal SM rated non diesel oil can have a max of about 800... +1 for the Rotella.

Shell has been reducing the ZDDP concentration in its diesel oils. The reasoning given was to keep their lubricant offerings consistant across their offerings. The problem you are going to have is the difference in diesel oil ratings is going to make it VERY difficult to determine whether it still meets the older SL spec, or just the newer SM specification.
I know the bottles I have seen have not had any packaging change yet, but the driver who drops them off, said they only recieve about a skid at a time at their office.

I would not run diesel oil in my Jeep. Ever.
The 10W-40 is too thick. Your lifters and various parts are starving for oil. The oil is not flowing through the various oil galleries and holes properly.
You are destroying your engine. Get the 10W-40 out of it and go to a good 10W-30 and a good filter.
Or go back to 5W-30. It flows better on startup.

Firestorm,
What's your reason for not running diesel oil? Rotella T is a dual rated oil for both diesel and gas engines. It says right on the bottle; " designed for hard working gas engines or mixed fleet vehicles".
I thought since it has a beefy add pack and more zinc than regular SM rated oil, it would be better....
