Saw this plug next to my airbox and I'm really wondering if it needs to be plugged into something.

That's your Data Link Connector. Used to connect an OBDI code reader inorder to read any Diagnostic Trouble Codes stored in your PCM.

If you get a CHECK ENGINE light, this is where you'd go.

Should keep it taped over when not in use to keep the crap out of it.

Thanks. I thought the only way to read obd1 codes was to read the flashes on the check engine light

Most people do the key trick to get their codes, but the best way is to use a code reader to get the code(s) - it's more professional. It will impress your girl friend (wife) when you use a code reader device. LOL
