Any way to use a newer era wiper motor with a renix era?
 

Hey guys...been awhile. Been busy. Lifted the Jeep and all that recently.

Got a recurring problem though. I've gone through 2 wiper motors (3 including the original) since I've had this Cherokee (89 renix) and I'm frikkin tired of it. I went to the JY again this last weekend and got into at least a dozen XJ's, which all still had their wiper motors....problem was all of them were the newer XJ's (92+) with the different type plug, and what I assume to be a different mounting setup, at least bolt placement.

Question is - is there any way to make a 92+ wiper motor work with renixes? I am not going to bother buying another one since the only option is $75 garbage remanned Cardones that are literally ripped out of similar junkyards and spray painted and will just burn up again. I would rather figure out how to get a newer one to work, and then I'd have basically a limitless supply of them.

I suppose it's possible that something is actually shorting in the wiring or whatnot, but as far as my voltmeter is concerned - I'm getting a good 12v constant and switched at the plug. Not too much else I can do other than re-running the entire harness.

All ya do is splice your factory motor plug to newer motor get wiring diag from both and your done. Did mine years ago .I dont really like spliceing harness, motor much easier when it out on bench.

I just wasn't sure if the actual gears or rotation amount or whatever were somehow different.

It took a little figurein but mines off a 98 if I remember.

How's your wiper motor ground?

Without looking into it as we speak - where is the ground at?

I had done all the ground refreshing already - at the dipstick, ran a beefier ground to all the ground points (firewall, dipstick) and even under the dash - all tips of yours. Is it somewhere separate or is it included in those main ones I already refreshed?

Driver's side inner fender meaning under the dash in the interior? That one I already ran a new jumper wire... I see you mention here that they do in fact ground to that spot.

I can go and verify it's a good jumper/good connections on both the new jumper and factory ground I suppose.

Nope. Under the hood by the air cleaner, EGR solenoid etc.

Following the split loom from the motor down - Most of the wires go into the main harness going into the firewall. A few split off and go into the washer pumps, and 2 go backwards up into the proportioning valve.

If the ground doubles back from the firewall harness plug to the fender, I do see a grounding spot on the very side of the engine bay - forward of the washer fluid reservoir. Wasn't dirty but I cleaned it off for good measure.

I redid the ground strap under the dash - much better now that I have a proper garage and tools to work with:

Also it's doing the same thing that my last wiper motor did when it went - it seems to dim the interior lights, at least when I engage the wiper. The last one was actually dimming the interior lights at all times, and when I disconnected it I realized it was the culprit.

I guess I'll just harvest a bunch of them at the JY. It's entirely possible that they have just been old wiper motors and were dying out thus far.

How's the Brown wire at your ignition switch look?

I'll be checking that tonight. Is there any way to improve it/prevent future problems while I'm in there?
