another newbie question

Sorry if I ask lots of newbie questions. I am new to giving a crap about the vehicle I drive. lol.

I finally crawled under my Jeep today to check front and rear diff fluid levels. While I was under there I decided to check the drive shafts when I give them a twist with my hand they turn a very slight amount. Is this something that needs fixed or is it normal? It's just tough when I'm not sure what is normal

thats normal they will twist a little bit back and forth

jd2311900 09-29-2009 04:22 PM

its normal

NewXJaddict 09-29-2009 04:23 PM

that's what I was hoping to hear. I have been trying to track down a noise that I have been hearing. I am thinking more and more that its just exhaust noise. Kind of a buzz sound kind of like sand on metal. Checked front and rear diffs, drive shaft movement (both drive shafts twist some but don't go back and forth.) Trans fluid was just changed.

Check to see how tightly all of your heat shields are welded on. if one of those is rattling against the exhaust it'll make a racket that gets louder and louder till it breaks off and starts clanging around (my experience w/ muffler heat shield).

NewXJaddict 09-29-2009 05:37 PM

lol as far as I could tell all my heat shields are already long gone. the connection between exhaust pipe and cat is rattling and squeaky.

humboldt2door 09-29-2009 05:47 PM

hah,
just cut out the cat and put in a straight pipe...i mean no, don't do anything illegal that'll make your car louder:naughty:
Your noise is probably just some random thing that's in exactly the wrong spot.
I had a loose bolt tumbling around under my back seat that would buzz if it was in the right spot at certain rpms, then I would hit a bump and it would go away!

NewXJaddict 09-29-2009 06:03 PM

yeah, that's pretty much what this is. Just at certain rpm's. I just had another valiant effort to check a fluid level shot down by my jeep.

I decided I might as well check the xfer case fluid level only to find out the fill/check plugs are bizarre sized. Oh well, I guess that's something for another day.
