I'm new to the jeep world. I bought a nice Cherokee 1989 and Ive read 3 forum post and the gas tank size goes from 13.5,16, 20 and 20.2.

I just filled my jeep up from the begin of the red line and it took 12.7 Gallons, but it only went to around the 3/4 mark.

So what tank do I have?

You best bet is to see if you can get the build sheet for you Jeep. I don't know still can because I know that they only go so far back. But here's the link where you can request one. All you need is the VIN number.

Go to the customer assistance link. Then go to Send us an Email and fill out the form.
At the bottom of the form where it asks for a brief description just put in that you want you build sheet. This will be very helpful for almost all the factory options on your Jeep.

Well, for starters a funky gauge, if it reads 3/4 when it's full!

Under 1/4 and above the red I take 10-12-14 in my 20 Gallon tank in my 90.

(Mine has a good bit below the red.) My Hanes says its 13.5 or 20, and since I've put 18 & 19 in it, I'm figuring it's 20. Like RT points out, sometimes those Vin decoders don't work on the older...I didn't try that one on mine..yet!

I'd bet you have a 20 as well.

Dang they dont keep records after 20 year mark, I guess all I can do is drive till I run out. Then filly my tank with 20l jerry can and I'll know then.

To my knowledge, the 4 cylinder Jeeps came with a 13.5 and the I-6 had a 15 gal tank, with 20 gal optional. 97s and later could be different.

I've never put more than 15.5 gallons in either of my I-6 Jeeps. Apparently the gas gauges are pessimistic but I don't want to find out by running out of gas.

So I have a 20 gallon tank that the indector goes red line beginning/ middle at 12.7 with 7.3 gallon = 20l Jerry left.

Mine was a V-6 model with a 14 gallon tank. (1985) it always irritates my buddies when it only takes 50-60 bucks to fill it up compared to their 20 gallons.
