alternator question

I think the alternator on my 97 xj sport is shot. I also have another xj its an 89 laredo, can I pull from the 89 to get my 97 up and running? I would just drive the 89 but it doesn't have plates yet, as its not winter road worthy yet, so I need my DD back! I looked the part #'s up and they are different, and I believe the 89 is rated for a little more amps but I can't remember.

Thanks

No - the 89 uses a Delco CS-130 (internally regulated,) and the 97 uses a Nippondenso (externally regulated.)

And the ratings are probably comparable, unless you have a 100A Delco (the 1997 w/6-242 will have a 90A standard or a 120A optional unit.)

If you're in a hurry, you can use an alternator from 1991-1998 w/6-242 as a direct swap, as well as the unit from a 1991-1998 w/4-150. The 1993-1998 ZJ 6-242 is also a direct swap, as is the 1991-1998 YJ/TJ w/4-150 or 6-242...
