Hi,
My airbag light does not turn off on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee. It failed inspection for this reason. The mechanic who inspected it said that it needed a new clockspring. I replaced the clockspring and the light stayed on. What else could it be besides a clockspring? Any suggestions? Thanks.

It might go out on it's own after so many cycles of the ignition. Just a guess though. The airbag light stays on in my wifes '99 grand cherokee also and I was told it is the clock spring. Did you change it yourself, if so how is it to change out?

the code needs to be cleared. have your mechanic clear it for you.
on a side note Ive never heard of failing inspection for an airbag light...
guess my state doesn't care lol

It could also be the airbag control module, they did in fact recall it. But is most likely your clock spring, I still need to change mine.

Does it blink a code when you turn the ignition on? I have an older Mazda that would flash a code (three blinks, pause, two blinks) that you could look up on the net to identify the problem. Turned out that the thermal fuse had blow. It cost $2 for a fuse and 30 minutes to install and I saves >$100 for a replacement module.
If no blinking code is shown, it may be possibe to scan the system (similar to OBD2).
Good Luck.

Thanks. My friend and I changed the clock spring. It is not difficult but it required a steering wheel puller, phillips screw driver, and a screw driver with a star bit. If you don't have a puller you can purchase one or get a loaner tool from an auto parts store (usually no charge just a refundable deposit) The hard part is finding a clock spring for cheap, new ones for my 98 jeep cherokee run about $200 or more but it may be cheaper and easier to find one for a 99 jeep cherokee. Best of luck!Originally Posted by 99xj1

Thanks. It had not blinked until yesterday. I found a wire under my seat that had come unpluged( it looks like it went to the safety belt) when I plugged it back in and started my jeep the airbag light came on, turned off for a second and came back on. Any ideas?Originally Posted by notop46

I believe there was a recall on the 1998 for a bad airbag module, id check into that, if im right, the repair would be free at a jeep dealer.Originally Posted by jbrooksdc

Look into the module as previously said.
In my case, I installed a modified Neon cs on my 98 XJ & the light went off on it's own. My guess is that it is the module or one of the wires on the back of the airbag is not connected. Remove the two 10 mm bolts & check that first.
Does the horn work? If so the cs should be fine. Right?

Not necessarily, you could have one broken wire in the ribbon or where it attatches. Airbag light off, horn doesn't work, cruise doesn't work,or any combination of the above.Originally Posted by Big David

Mine caused a p0123 code, cruise didn't work and horn didn't work. But never set off the airbag light.
