Default Air Control Unit Won't Light Up

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country and I drive it at night due to school and work. When I turn on my lights, everything turns on besides the unit to turn on the air whether it be AC, Cold, or Hot air. I give it a couple taps and it usually lights up, until the next time I start it. Then for when I need it, I need to give it a couple taps to light it up again. I'm guessing it's just a loose connection, but I can't find out how to get to the unit. I don't know how to pop out the besil's and I don't want to crack a besil or something. Does anyone know how to go about taking apart the dash to get to the air control unit? Thanks in advance!

That's funny. I'm in exactly the same situation as you. I drive home from class late are night and my ac controls back light is out. I pulled it out last night to check for another ac issue in having and decided to check the bulb. Of course it was burnt out. It's a little itsy bitsy one that twist locks into the controls. It's not hard to get it out. Hopefully yours is the same. AutoZone sells a pair of new ones for $5. Its like a 73 or 78. I don't know. I just haven't got around to replacing it yet lol but it is a fairly quick and easy job if you've removed the ac control unit before.

Lmao true. I would do the led swap for the interior but I need to spend my money on the last bits of refurb maintenece until I start the aftermarket stuff

Just have to remove the instrument panel bezel and the radio to access the bulb/socket.

4 screws.......

Here's where to get your LEDs as a kit:

I didn't even have to remove the radio for my 89, however it is aftermarket and slightly smaller in size than the stock one... but yeah. Took me a few minutes to do it. Easy peasy.

I used the 74 bulbs however the LED kit might not be a bad idea so can keep the interior lights on without wasting so much power with the engine off. going to miss the romantic halogen lighting if I do that though
