Air conditioning question, re: compressor and aux electric fan
I have a couple of questions.
The XJ is a 2001 Classic model. When the A/C is on should the compressor be on constantly or should it cycle like when the heat is on? Is the aux electric radiator fan supposed to turn on as soon as the AC is turned on? I know the fan itself works because it turned on buy itself (the a/c was off) when I sat in traffic with warm weather. If it IS supposed to turn on with the AC, I'm guessing that I have a bad relay, does this sound right? Is there a dedicated relay that turns the fan on with the AC or does it share the same relay to turn the fan on when the coolant gets a little too warm? Nik |
Others have posted that on '00/'01 models, the efan only turns on at 218f coolant temp, not with a/c compressor engagement.
In hot weather, our compressor seldom cycles off. |
On my 2000, the electric fan does "not" come on when the a/c is turned on. But I do have the efan wired to a switch on my dash so I can turn it on with the a/c! :)

Just fixed mine
As a very smart Texan on CF has posted many times, XJ's should cool just fine without the Aux fan running if the system is in good working order. If your XJ has no A/C, you don't get a aux fan.
The Last of the breed XJ's use a binary high side switch to control the aux fan AND the temp switch mounted in the water outlet. Aux fan kicks on when high side pressure reaches a threshold AND/OR when the temp exceeds a threshold. It does not turn on with the compressor clutch like the older models. Check the following- Battery #10 fuse in kick panel - 15 amp Fan relay Clutch relay low side switch high side switch temp switch fan My fan was bad - replaced it #10 fuse popped - replaced it ice cold A/C is a beautiful thing |
