when i bought my cherokee is was missing that rectangular piece that comes from the stock air box and goes into the front of the jeep with a little bit of foam...i went to a wrecker and all the air boxes and rectangluar pieces were all one...are some years detatchable or did the guy who owned my jeep previous chop the piece off for some reason?

Mine doesn't have anything in the front. Just the rectangular cut out and that's it. I'm pretty sure it came that way, so there's nothing to worry about.

mine too mine has nothing in front of the air box i wouldnt worry about it

I looked at my air box and there appears to be no marks as if anything was removed... I was able to take a in depth look as mine is out of the jeep as I replaced it with a performance intake

thanks guys ..my friend has a 93 cherokee and his airbox is the same but it was that little rectangular airway that goes to the front clip.its weird because the front clip has a rectangular cut-out to fit that piece but my hole looks like it has a piece of metal welded and painted to cover the hole...i dont understand why someone would do this if he did..its just sucking more hot air now. have you guys seen the air boxes wth the air ways to the front clip?? mines a 95 btw

I own a 91. I too have the small rectangular plastic tube running from the front right of the airbox to what looks like right behind the driverside headlight. It is deffinatly stock. just appears to be a funnel to run the cold air to the intake. Hope this helps
