iirc you can get a headliner kit for like 30 bucks and re do it.
theres a styro foam (idr how to spell today:laughing) type material above that and the cloth is glued to it and over time the adhesive deteriorates and the cloth starts to fall. mine did the same thing but mines just for wheelin so i tore out the cloth and i get to look at the foam.

I had to do this on my '84 Cherokee too. I pulled it out and removed the old material. The backing board is compressed fiberglass so it's fragile. One Howto I found says to apply fiberglass resin to the backing to make it stiffer so that the new cloth will stick. I just hosed mine with cheap Wal-Mart black spraypaint. Lots of it! It's only .77c here so it was much cheaper than the $75 for enough resin to do this.

Your local fabric store will carry the headliner in a few colors. It has the thin foam padding on the back also.

The expensive part is the 3M Headliner adhesive. I can't remember how much I used, but it was about 20 bux a can! The spraypaint step is to keep the adhesive from just soaking into the fiberglass.

If you google for headliner replacement cherokee - you should find a TON of info.

Cheap route?? Just use paperclips to hold it up or that thin plastic wood trim. Just make a few "slats" that tuck under the trim and bow upward to hold the liner up. My '84 ran that way for years before I replaced the liner.

Plan on $100 to do it right and a few days of time.

I had the headliner re-done on my chevy about 4 years ago... because of the same look you have. It only cost me 80$. Call around, price check some businesses, as well as put up an ad on craigslist, advertising to try to get some guy to do it for you in his free time for cash. You can work out a deal for cheaper maybe. Either way, you might find it cheaper than you expect, especially since the materials will cost about half as much as paying to have it done anyway.

The head-liner looked good, and greatly reduced the hassel. Best 80 I've spent in a long time. (other that having some exhaust work done.)
