Default UPDATE: New Crank Pulley Squeal w/ new belt?

Hi all,

Need opinions on an issue that developed after a weekend of wheeling. I found a chip in my crankshaft pulley (motor is 1.5yrs old with 8k on full remann) on the inside lip towards the motor (not the front bumper, see pics)
Now, I think this chip in the crank pulley is causing the sound I am hearing as well at idle (rev or throttle it, and you don't hear it anymore..) Please see the video attached. https://*******/DYUf

Thoughts on what I should do? I've been told keep an eye on the belt, if its not being torn up dont worry about it. I've also been told I'm just asking for my internals to get messed up with a chip in the HB and crank pulley. Someone also mentioned that when I pull the crank pulley, check the bearing for play, and if there is play then my motor will be toast shortly? I hope not...

Thoughts? How does this even happen? Pebble from highway speeds?

UPDATE:

Install went pretty well after disassembled enough room to get at it. I installed a new radiator , crank pulley/ harmonic balancer and new serpentine belt. The pulley was rather easy, I used a slightly longer bolt to press the pulley on, then fed the original bolt and washer back on and cranked hard on it (tapped it with an impact to be sure since i dont have torque wrench.) Installed the belt, had to tighten the idler pulley before the belt got quiet enough to hear the crank pulley chirp at startup? I'm sure I sat the new crank pulley/ HB well to the snub of crank shaft.

Any ideas why I might be chirping AT the new crank pulley?

Pull the belt off, and start it back up, this will tell you if it is the engine, or one of your accessories/pulleys making the sound.

That's bunk about the bearing. Don't listen to that guy anymore.

I would run it if it was mine.

looks like some one dropped it. Maybe the mechanic that did the rebuild dropped the harmonic balance in the dis-assembly or re-assembly process and knocked a chip out of it. As long as it is not wobbling around wile it is running it should be fine.

Make sure it's not separated like this.

it doesn't look separated or bad at all, just that chip I found and the "aluminium sound" I have at idle. I'm more so worried since the CS/HB doesn't look bad that it's a thrust bearing going out... but you said not to worry about that Cruiser54?

https://*******/DYUf
Video of the sound of the pulley at idle. It sounds like its rubbing something...

Worry about finding what the noise IS.

That bunk about the front bearing is just that....

Get one of these.

^ I am not smart enough to use a mechanics stethoscope. But I was able to change the pulley, check for play in the crankshaft- didn't budge a bit. The old CP/ HB had bad chip that was causing the sound.

I feel better that I fixed it anyways, and was able to throw in my new radaitor at the same time... had to make my own fittings since the new aftermarket 3 core one didn't come with tranny fittings.

Thanks everyone for their input!

You're smart enough. Didn't you ever play doctor as a kid?

Way to stick with it.

Nah, I had to grow up quick. Missed out on things like that, and things like learning to fix your own vehicle... so I just have to try and try and try... for someone skilled this task might taken a couple hours at most but it took me 7hrs from start to finish. Learned a hell of alot the way my engine and its accessories are put together...that was useful.

What's the stethoscope MAINLY used for finding? Internal motor issues?

Thank you for the support Cruiser.

The stethoscope is super handy. $5 at Hobo Freight. bearing noises, pulley noises, alternator noises. You name it. Just get one and poke around. You'll love it . Guaranteed.
