Just picked up some factory roof rails off of a 91 XJ at the junk yard. I plan on sanding them down and cleaning them up.
My question for yall, Can I easily add these to my 99 XJ which did not come with any roof rails? I was thinking about some self tapping stainless screws with a whole lot of clear silicon to water seal them.

Also, these factory roof rails so not appear so sturdy. at least not where the plastic section meets the rail that goes the length of the roof.

The end goal here is to add a low profile roof basket like the last two pictures here. Is this rack even strong enough to support much? Not that i would put more than 50 lb in the rack anyways.

Any ideas? The fist two pics are the junkyard rack. The next pic is where i think the weak point in the factory rails are. And the last two are end goals for a roof rack system.

Know what a rivnut is? That is how they are secured to the roof. Start watching at about 1:10.

is the stock roof rack substantial enough to add a roof basket. It feels very very flimsy

Have a safari rack on my 92 with stock rails. Holds up Ok so far!
