I have a 1997 XJ, and the AC compressor goes in and out. The electric fan always shuts on and off normally, and whenever the compressor is spinning the air blows icey cold.
At the start of the day when I first start the jeep, the ac is always cold. It stays cold until I get somewhere and shut it off. Whenever I come back out and start it back up, it's usually blowing warm air. I can then pop the hood, get out, and with a wrench or something push against the front plate of the clutch, spinning it. After I spin it hard enough once or twice I can hear it click and start spinning on its own, and then the ac is cold and I can go about my way.
Every now and again it stops working while driving, and every now and again it starts working again while driving.

Any ideas on what needs to be replaced would be very appreciated
