Default AC Clutch

My A/C works fine, when the clutch engages. If I start the Jeep and the engine hasn't been ran for hours, it will kick in and run fine. The first time I shut the Jeep off and restart it, the clutch will not engage. You can see the clutch pulling in slightly, but not making contact with the pulley. If I tap on the pulley while it is running it will pull the clutch in.

Is there anyway to repair or replace the clutch without having to replace the entire compressor?

Autozone sells just the clutch (200), but for the price you'd be better off with the compressor kit from Rockauto.

It sounds like that it is getting weak. You can buy yourself some time by pulling the clutch and removing one of the shims (It's actually a washer). I don't have the directions on how to do it. But if you do a search on here there are a couple of write up on how to do it. It is really easy and take less then 10 mins. to do.

None of the parts stores around me (AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, CarQuest) list a A/C clutch assembly for the Cherokee. They only have the complete compressor.

That is what I was thinking about doing. If I can get through this summer that would be fine by me.

I know when I pulled one of the washers out on my 98 because it wasn't cooling like it should it made a big difference. It started cooling much better and I did mine about 2 years ago.
