ABS on the XJ

Thought it was pretty strange to discover officially (called up the dealer confirmed with my VIN) my hunch that my 98 XJ did not come equipped with ABS. Not sure why this is so and am certainly not complaining either. This means I can go with any tire size I'd like legally in Maine. Out of curiosity though, does anyone know why Jeep didn't make this a standard feature by 98? Second, would like to hear from anyone who owns an XJ from this era on whether or not they have ABS..

I have a 97 with ABS and absolutely hate it. I have a donor 96 without abs so i can change mine over. I also am installing a d44 rear when i do this.

IF you have abs you got a Dana 35 or Turd rear end, if you dont have abs you got the chrysler 8.25. which is a much better rear end.

Hope this helps a little

Hmmm

Strange, my 97 XJ has ABS, but my 2001 does not. Go figure.

I recently purchased my 98 XJ. I don't think it has ABS. But, how would I know for certain?

Under the hood in front of the master cylinder there is a block looking thing with about 4 to 6 brake lines coming out of it. If you have that there you got abs.

Also if you can tell the difference in the rear end you got: dana35 = abs
8.25 = non abs.

Hmm thanks ngaxjing, anyone know why they did this? Also, why'd they use the 8.25 for non-abs models and the d35 for abs models?
