ABS light

I drive a UK 2002 jeep cheeroke and I have an ABS light on. I have tried to diagnose with 2 pieces of diagnostic software and it can't see it. A garage has also tried 2 different pieces of hardware and software with no luck. Jeep are telling me they are the only ones who can diagnose and want to charge me £114 to run there stuff for a few mins they charge per hr. Can anyone suggest to me what I check to try and solve the problem.

Does abs actually function?

My brakes work. Not sure if ABS is functioning.

**** abs! its worthless! i crashed a subby this winter cause of abs! but, my opinions aside, as long as its not partially functioning your fine. if its faulty, then your breaking distance will probably suffer. are all parts of your breaking system good? is there mud and whatever else jammed in there? i think part of the reason i went into that snowbank was because there was snow packed in around the breaks (just from normal driving- its the work car so no abuse!) and it messed with the sensors in there. but idk for sure. could be the abs was functioning properly, but if thats the case a 2007 subby outback wagon was going to have TWICE the stopping distance as my 1999 jeep cherokee (w/o abs) and thats no good...

when it works, it works great. when its a little off, you go into snowbanks...

When you turn the key to the run position, does the abs light go out or stay on.

The system performs a static check first, ie, continuity of wheel sensors. If one sensor is bad the light will stay light.

More info needed.
