Default 99xj

I need advice. I have a 99xj just a mud toy. wife took a bump too hard and broke the front Pinion gear, I was gonna buy the ring and pinion kit and replace it but I found a complete set out of a 89 xj for 250$. My question is will that be a direct bolt on replacement giving me time to build the old axles like I want?

Yes and no, the axle will fit just fine, but it is a CAD (center axle disconnect) that is vacuum controlled. You could permanently lock the disconnect (plenty of write ups on the web), or use the axle from your rig (that's a little more work than locking the disconnect). The whole axle itself will swap right in though.

Thank you for affirming the fitment. The disconnect shouldn't be a problem I plan on having that engaged full time anyways either the hose clamp method or welding until I can get a solid axle for that side and do away with the half axle completely.

I went to the solid axle on mine, it is a little work as you need to remove the seal for the CAD and the C-clip on the middle shaft at the carrier. You will also need to add a seal at the diff as it does not have one because it is sealed at the CAD. I forget which seal is needed but it is not the same as the driver side seal and it takes a little massaging of the seal lip on the diff and some gentle driving of the seal to seat it. There is plenty of write ups that should get you the correct seal or maybe someone will chime in with the number.

Yes, it will be a direct bolt-on if the gear ratios match. Check the ratio on the door sticker or spin the tires to confirm. If they are the same, the '89 axle will bolt right in and buy you time for your build.
