Question 99 XJ - LR QTR Wiring

Hello y'all; hope every one is having a good weekend!

So about a month ago, my 1999 XJ Classic 4.0L had a slight wiring short in the left rear quarter panel area and caused a fire. Luckily, it didn't total the vehicle, but I need some clarification on the wiring.

Has anyone worked in that area that can tell me if there was a connector or module that the wires connected to? The wires have terminals on them so I know it wasn't wire to wire per say.

The attached pictures will hopefully give y'all a better idea of the area and wiring I am in question about; was there a connector or module in that area?

Any information is greatly, greatly, appreciated. Thank you community in advance, and I apologize for my absence in the forums... please don't be too harsh

Red - LR Quarter Panel Wiring Area
Yellow - Wiring Terminal Ends
Blue - Original Wiring Locations
Green - Area Wires Terminated At (connector? module?)

ADD EDIT - The right wiring diagram should show if there was a X### or module there... maybe?

I'm viewing the wiring diagram and it looks to show that the left tail/stop lamp, right tail/stop lamp, and CHMSL all go to S302, which is a splice.
So... am I safe to assume that I can just use butt connectors and do wire to wire directly?

Also the harness to the liftgate runs from that side. Plate light, rear wiper washer, lock, and rear defroster.

Yes, I do notice that all those components' wires run along that harness also. I believe I can use butt connectors for each wire in place of the factory splice.
The fact the wires had terminals on the ends threw me off, which is why I was questioning whether or not I could use butt connectors.

No reason you can't use butt connectors. Obviously be sure you have good connections so you don't get another fire. If it were me I would pick up used harnesses for the liftgate and tail light. And maybe cut off the body side plugs with enough extra wire and then splice them into your existing harness.
