Default 99 xj engine swap???

So my nephew just bought a 99 cherokee sport but the engine is blown, my question is can he use a engine from any 99 or below? Someone is telling him that he has to get one from a 99 only because the motor mounts and everything is different for that year. I havent got to personally see the jeep yet. If someone could please chime in I would greatly appreciate it thanks.

You can basically swap in any 4.0L, 91 and newer is preferable cause they are the HO versions (ie heads). The only things that significantly changed where the boss's for the motor mounts and accessories. The accessories can just be swapped over because they have similar mounting points. I'm not sure on how exactly the motor mounts differ but i believe the break is the 96-97 model change era. Cams also changed in 91 for HO and 2000 for smog reasons which shouldnt affect you in KY. 2000+ have coil packs so theres no hole for the dizzy and in 96 the block was revised with more webbing to reduce harshness.

Thats about the extent to my wealth of knowledge lol

If I was you, look for 96-99 from any jeep.
