Default '99 either starts or wont crank at all

Just got a 1999 cherokee and about a third of the time you go to start it, it will just click no turning over at all. When that does happen I just take the key out and try again, and it always starts. I've been trying to find a similar problem on here or anywhere online but can't find anything like it. The jeep has never not started, the most it has taken is three tries that sound like its a dead battery, then the next try it starts right up no problem. Any ideas?

Welcome to Cherokee Forum

start with easy first.

Clean up the battery terminals. Take off leads and clean them with a battery connector brush.

Then go have the battery load tested at a parts store, should be free.

Bad starter motor or solenoid, or bad cable connections.

Have you tried.starting it in neutral? Or even drive or reverse? In case the shifter became misaligned. Be safe!
