We have purchased our first Jeep and we love it. I found a WONDERFUL deal for $4k at 90k miles and its in great internal/external shape aside from 1 lil problem. It is a beautiful Amethyst blue/purple color and was a 1 owner vehicle. It is almost in too good a shape to use for what we bought it for (muddin), but thats what its for.... to go walk the dog somewhere he can run. The dog should be feeling very special right about now cause that was the sole reason behind getting it, not to mention not wanting to have to clean the other car all the time.

How deep a wet mud should I avoid with it? We chickened out with the 4x4 drive when faced with 1 to 2 foot deep saturated/puddled mud ruts. I bet we could've went through it, but I'm not in the "know" on the limits of the great Cherokees.

Now for the problem:
From time to time all the gauges on the instrument panel cease to function. This usually seems to happen at idle/park or traveling at low speeds in a neighborhood. I've read up a lil bit and some people think this could be related to humidity/rain too.

In any case the intermittent gauges failing is always accompanied by:
Check Engine light comes on
Air Bag light comes on
"No Bus" or "No bu5" shows on the odometer

Vehicle mechanical functions do not seem affected. IE: The engine still runs and so does everything else. A restart of the Jeep usually gets rid of it, but it does pop up again from time to time.

 

Check the ground wires at the back of the instrument cluster.

 

we are having the same issue but all the time. our is a 98 sport 4.0ltr with 110k. any other ideas?

 

I just noticed tonight that I lost all Gauge function at about 40mph.
Wiggled the ignition switch and back they came.
Only did it once.

 

Hmmm possibly a bad tumbler

 

The next time the guages fail, push in on the plastic covering of the gauge cluster compartment with the fongers of one hand and see if they come back to life again.

If so, you'll have to remove all the plastic bits surrounding the cluster and reseat all the connectors on the back of the cluster.

Mine did this and it was a PITA, until I reseated all the connectors. It's quite easy, I don't recall the process exactly, but IIRC, I started with the fascia surrounding the stereo/AC area and worked my way up to the cluster surroundings.

Less than one hour/six pack.
