98 starter on a 2000 xj
Last I was 4wheeling with some friends and as luck would have it my starter goes bye bye.One of my friends was driving a 98 XJ so I borrowed his starter to start mine then gave it back after mine was started .Got it on and mine started but as luck would have it I some how busted my oil filter . Well the same guy I borrowed the starter from so happens to have a new oil filter in the back of his XJ and another friend had some oil. so I rode the trails for another hour or so then went home before anything else happen .my friend said his 98 XJ starter was 64 dollars with the 4.0 so today I called all the parts stores in my town to price one for my 2000 and it's 120 something. My question is can I buy the one for the 98 that's only 60 something or do I need one for the 2000.both our XJ's are sports, auto and sport model.

Well, 98 and 2000's are both post update. You already know the 98's starter worked on yours. So, I'd say: go with what you can afford. A $60 part however will likely be different quality than a $120 part.

Id like to know if all cherokees use the same starter why is my 2000 so much more than the earlier cherokees? How can they price them that much for the same part.

You remember how I said the 2000-2001 jeep Cherokee starter had the plug and the older ones have the stud.Well I went and got a new starter yesterday at O'Reillys the only place I shop.all together it was 70 but has the life time warranty because I heard Jeeps were hard on starters.when I took my starter off I noticed I don't have the plug I have the studs like the older ones. being my Jeep is a 2000 and should have had the plug instead of the stud do you think I have a early 2000 that maybe they used left over parts from 99? Also the valve cover has been wrote on with a yellow marker which I think they means it's from a junkyard but my motor still has the coil packs.either way I'll be able to bolt it on without cutting the lines and having to add the O ring clips.
