98 cherokee needs detroit metro mechanic
Hey all, this is my first post and i'd appreciate any help that I can get!
My 98 cherokee (manual) seems to be stumping my mechanic... any advice?
Battery light turned on and the engine would squeak(no battery light no squeak). Shortly after the dash would die, but car still drove.
Couple days later same problem, but car turned off while driving 40mph, no restart.
Mechanic replaced a fuse, but said it was running high voltage. He couldnt get the voltage down, but gave me an extra fuse just in case it happened again. On the way home experienced "battery light and squeak" and new engine sound.
The next time I drove the car (20 miles after getting it back) it stalled while driving and was overheating, (coolant all over the engine)
thanks everybody!

Well, the first issues sound like possibly a grounding problem. If I were the mechanic, I'd go over all electrical connections and grounds to see if anything is out of order.
The overheating issue...sounds entirely different..but you'll definitely want to figure out what caused it to happen.

Sounds like a pulley on the serp belt is freezing up. My guess would be the alternator since your problems originated with the battery charging. Loosen and remove the belt. Spin all the pulleys and make sure they spin freely. Also have your alternator tested.
On a side note, hope this mechanic is a friend or at least giving a discount. He should be able to figure this stuff out.

Being cheap and friendly is no reason to go to a mechanic if he has no idea what he is doing. I would rather pay more for a mechanic with a brain that isn't ripping you because he has no idea how to work on a car...
