Default 97 xj NSS question

97 cherokee classic 4.0l 4wd auto
put a nss from a 99 cherokee on my truck today. Wondering if there is any difference between the 99 and the 97 NSS's. I did not think so, but who knows. The shifter is rather hard to change between gears, doesnt have the tap into gear feeling anymore.
