I have a 92' cherokee and its making a similar sound but isnt backfireing, i've been told to check the flexplate bolts and also told my timing chain maybe off by a little bit, i'm not sure if there is a diffrence between the 92' engine and the 97' engine, let us know what it may have been and post pics if you can!

I live between golden valley and sun valley in the hills, you might want to have your fuel sensor looked at, well i noticed today when i was speeding home, (well i accidentally put it in 3rd and not in drive, sometimes it slips into it)
it wasn't making any noise other then the popping noise from the steering until i noticed the RPMS in the 3500-4000 then after that i noticed it was in third and put it in Drive and it started making the clanking noise again!
