Default '96 vs '98 electric fan connector

Are the electrical connectors on the aux electric cooling fans different on '98 and '96 Cherokees? My buddy has a '96 XJ with some cooling issues. Aside from an original fan clutch he needs to replace, his Cherokee has a 5-blade fan (see pic below), and it just doesn't seem to be moving much air. I suggested he replace it with the newer 9-blade design like I have since mine is noticeably better. However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the electrical connector changed with the '97 MY refresh. Worst case we just splice it in since it's primary an offroad-only Jeep at this point.

I think the '96, and back, had round pin connectors and in '97 OBDII flat pin connectors were used. Some sensors on the late production '96's had flat pins. And in '97 these late production flat pin connectors, like the CPS, were carried over on early production '97's.

I wouldn't own either of these Rube Goldberg Jeeps.

Sounds like he might have to splice. NBD. Thanks Ken.
