96 Transmission help!
Hello everyone. I picked up at 96 Grand Cherokee (4.0/42re/242) last week as a project/family trail toy. This is my first jeep project so I am green and trying to learn as much as I can. I bought this jeep knowing that the trans was slipping with the intention of fixing it myself.
On to the symptoms:
Reverse - hooks up great no issues.
Drive - Half throttle or more and it chatters and slips. Honestly it feels like it is limping in 2nd or 3rd gear. The reason I think that is because if I gradually increase throttle I can get all the way up to 50mph and never see or feel a shift.
I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and fluid with ATF+4 - NO CHANGE.
Now I have a donor trans/tcase with 50k miles that I can attempt to put in there but I DO not know exactly what it is. Can someone help with that? I do not have a VIN but I have the numbers off of the trans.
Trans - PK521195322780 1120
Tcase - 249
Little long winded but thanks in advance for helping the new guy out!

The grand Cherokee forum page might get you more help, but a couple of things off the top of my head.
First - Assuming that you have an AW4 tranny hooked up to your 4.0, I'd replace that fluid with Dex/Murc III.
I don't know the location in the grand, but I'd suggest finding and unplugging the TCU and see if your tranny will go in to gear when you manually select them on the shifter.
I'd also find the the best place to check the solenoids with a multimeter. Again, not sure where the best place on your Grand would be. A little google searching will tell you where you should test (I'm guessing at the TCU plug) and what your ohm reading should be.
Hopefully its something as simple as a bad TCU or a solenoid or two, and not something majorly wrong internally on the tranny.
