(96) Driver window doesnt go down beyond 3 inches
Weird problem today, the window only went down about 3 inches and stops, I switched it up and it went up. Down again and got stuck. Once in a while it will go back up, but not any further than about 3 inches down. Likely something with regulator or the motor?
I got the door open up, but IDK how I am going to get the window off as the attachment is right behind the frame and I cant get the window beyond this point. Any ideas? Update: I drilled a hole through the frame to get to torx head and unhooked the window/motor. But...I got it all out yet I inspected the cable and see NOTHING wrong with it, the motor just stops at a certain spot and does not go past it. I wonder if maybe there is a broken tooth or something in the motor? I see one hex head on the top of the motor, but other than that no way to get into it. Ideas? |

AFAIK, it's not fixable. It's been a while since I was into mine, but I think I'm remembering it's a sealed unit. Press fit and that kind of thing. Time to replace . Or maybe take a chance on a junkyard part. Since you have a 96, I'd guess you can use a 96 down to about a 90. |
So I tore into the whole thing, drilled out the rivets etc...and you know what the problem of my ENTIRE window problem is? There is a plastic gear inside the motor that is driven by the worm gear has a crack in it that opened up so slightly the gear now binds right at that spot.
...Cant believe a cheap plastic part is the whole problem. |
I can believe it. That's the part that normally fails.

Well, now here is the question, it is only that gear, but I see the entire motor/regulator going for 100$ anywhere to get this cheaper?
I am really tempted to go to a junk yard and get the stuff for just a manual window. |
You can look for used on CL or on this forum. There's a ''parts for sale' section.
I think my 94 is good. I can test it for you if you like. |
Well major update, I soldered the plastic gear, it spun, I reassmbled it, and it stuck again. I was pretty stumped, but I realized the entire guide rail was very gunked up. Cleaned it up in gas, reoiled it and ended up re-soldering the gear again. I was ready to give up, but it actually completely worked. It works better than any other window.
