'96 Cherokee Throwing Code P1493

Anyone know what P1493 PCM code on a '96 XJ is?

Battery sensor low voltage..

Check the sensor under battery for a broken/corroded wire.

There is a sensor on the bottom of the battery that reads battery temp? Weird.

It provides input to help regulate your charging system. Real cold battery = More charging. And vice versa.

Hmmmm.....

The gauge in the dash drops well below 14v when I turn the heater controls on high. However, the battery never shows less than 14v using a multimeter.

Voltage drop due to line loss.

Your multimeter is on top of the battery, there is a bit of wire, and probably a couple of connectors between the dash gauge and battery.

Even with the multimeter you might see a momentary voltage drop when you turn the heater fan on, but it should recover. The dip may occurs so fast that the voltmeter misses it.
