Welcome to CF.

That's the heater control valve(HCV) that everyone including the factory as of '97 eliminates.

x2

Elimination of mine on my 95 is on the list of spring-time Jeep to-do's.

Josh - if you read that thread it will detail why there's every reason to ditch it and not any good reason to keep it.
The selling point for me was the 'not having stagnant coolant rotting out the heater core'. My 95 has a working heater core and I want it to stay that way.

That's a very good reason for sure. Besides that though you never know when there going to give up the ghost. I hadn't worked on,started,or driven my XJ for 3-4 days. I was standing at the front window just gawking. Looked at the XJ and noticed a good size wet spot. HCV just decided to let go. Glad I was home!

Forgot to add that I didn't use the preformed hoses. I bought the proper lengths so I could mount the hot hoses on the right fender and away from against the valve cover. Don't know if it helped anything but .......

For future “what’s the part number” questions, this site has a nice collection of catalogs in PDF. https://xjjeeps.com/
