'96 Cherokee...smells

I'm noticing 2 smells while driving. The first should be easy, it smells like a freshly lit match. The other is more difficult to imagine, to me it's like butter in a frying pan. Any help is appreciated.

It wants to go camping.

judbgrdmchn 10-11-2012 05:59 AM

Any SERIOUS help is appreciated.

Smell #1: sulfur, probably from exhaust. Try switching gas stations. Did this with my DD and fixed the smell.
Smell #2: is it a sweet smell? Might be antifreeze. Check your exhaust for any obvious signs of something dripping on it. Then try to trace it back.

Not sweet like antifreeze, like frying butter.

judbgrdmchn 10-11-2012 10:46 AM

Also, I got a lean mixture check code & if I idle too long the engine gets boggy until I can drive it into at least 3rd for a minute. Then it's fine until I idle again.

Are you familiar with the smell of antifreeze?
When the windshield is cold, turn the heater control to cold and the defroster on, see if you see any fogging on the windshield.

VERY familiar with antifreeze. I'll try the windshield tomorrow morning.

Got me again! we were both posting...yea...I'm that slow. So you know THE smell. Yea, check anyway, easy enough. Butter is a faded memory for me.
But I lost 40 lbs

Anyway I might try to see if it's related to the air intake for the heat ect. Like, does it get stronger blasting the defrost, ever.??

Good catch on the battery there radi. VVV, only source of sulfur.

The sulfur smell- check around your battery too. Leaking? And vacuum an/or pre-O2 exhaust leaks- they'll cause the system to richen up and the cat will stink.

that butter smell- do you have trans fluid dripping on the exhaust? Mrs. Butterworth and/or Aunt Jemimah tied up in the back?

AridzonaXJ93 10-12-2012 02:11 AM

If I can take a stab at it the sulfur smell could mean your cat is going bad.

as far as the butter smell.. No idea.

judbgrdmchn 10-12-2012 05:51 AM

Now we're getting somewhere. I've been thinking it was cat/O2 problem. Just wanted some verification on it before I have the cat tested & drop $300+ on it & a new sensor.

Butter in a frying pan smells like heaven! Let us know what is causing it so I can make it happen on my XJ!

judbgrdmchn 10-12-2012 02:40 PM

Yes, but this is more like when it's brown & about to burn.

judbgrdmchn 10-12-2012 03:29 PM

Windshield test was possibly skewed. I left the windows down last night so the windshield was already foggy inside. Putting the defroster on cold cleared it up though.

When the engine dies from idling too long, I can't start it for about 20 minutes. Once started, it's boggy until I get it up to around 55. Then it's fine until it idles too long again. If I catch it before it dies & get it up to 55 or so, then I'm ok for awhile. This is becoming annoying as it died 4 times today, taking up nearly an hour & a half & caused me to be too late to make it to a garage.
