Default 96 cherokee dies then cranks but won't start..

Hey all, I've searched and searched and have gotten alot of info. When my cherokee(96 auto, 178,000mi) starts I'll run it and it'll just die. I can crank it but no start. I pumped the crap out of the pedal and it'll start real rough. But won't stay running all the time. I replaced the fuel pump already to no avail. I've read anything from CPS to injectors. Any ideas why it'll start if i pump it but won't stay running?

Shep-it will run rough for a few seconds then 'kinda' stabilize but it doesn't seem to idle on it's own. I know that's a little vague but thats all I got so far. Like I said I read enough to think it's the cps I just need someone with actual experience to tell me thats what it is. This is my only mode of transportation and I couldn't get to a parts store today so saturday I'll prob just pick one up. 00XJ-It did start the next morning like normal but I shut it off and couldn't start it again. Thanks for your replies. I appreciate it

I thought the CPS was a "safety" device If it did not sense movement of the flywheel it will not allow
1) Spark
2) Fuel at the injector
If its the CPS it won't start.
I would check the fuel lines and did that year have a fuel pressure regulator ?

Autozone can test the CPS so ur not wasting your money. On your fuel rail you have an bleeder like an tire stem make sure that u have fuel presure. It should shot gas out if it doesn`t then you have fuel problems if it does then check spark. If the CPS goes out then ur engine won`t start. Plus make sure that ur vacume line is hooked up to ur fuel rail. That regilates ur fuel presure.
