Default 96/97 tranny issue

hey guys,

i have a 96/97, my 96 is pretty much a 97+ years, for some reason its a full cross over and the guy before me only bought the lift and tires the rest was from factory, thus being said, i dont drive fast i drive about 40-45 MPH(highway 50-55mph), now heres my question/ problem, im never getting into 4th or 5th gear(i have never gotten it past 4th gear, never been higher than 55MPH and im counting how many times it shifts) , thus being it stays in 3rd revving at 2000-2300RPM depending on outside temp.(I dont know why) this is killing gas milage... and also it shifts earlier when the ambient temp is hotter outside, i drive to work and it does shift into 4th gear and it revs at 1700RPM at 40-45 MPH when i drive home at night it stays in 3rd gear at 2200-2300RPM. why does this happen and is there a way i can get my automatic to shift into teh next highest gear sooner?? maybe create more vacum or reprogram the computer??? whats the meathod the tranny uses to know when to shift?(Load or vacuum?)

And i drive the same i accel. slow never punch the gas and TP is nearly the same every time i drive....

Thanks guys

I have a 96 also and no Cherokee regaurdless of the year with an auto has a 5 speed. With that being said , it sounds like your overdrive is out. Its a 3 speed with overdrive [ A 4 speed ? ] . Try spraying WD-40 on the shift linkage and wire brush before doing so. Repeat once a day for a few days and see how it runs befor you go dumping money into it. Chrysler products are good for the linkage freezin up. Should be on the ds of tranny underneth. Good luck.

From what i've been reading your problem is one of three things, tps(most common), the solenoids in the trans, or the tcm or whatever its called. I seen on one site where it said there was a recall on the tps. Didnt say what years though.
