Hello. I hope everyone is well. I just recently got a 1993 XJ Sport after owning a 1994 XJ for 10 years. When my '94 was sitting on "E" I could put between 16-17 gallons of gas in it. The '93 I just got will take 18-19 gallons when the needle is at the same position (Last time it cut off at 19.8 gallons) I always thought all XJs had 20 gallon tanks or was there an option for a larger or smaller one? Or is the gauge messed up on my '93 and when it shows "E" I'm actually running on fumes.

I think they are all the same....My 92 will take 19.8 when I'm empty.

I know that they come with 2 sizes. One I know for sure is the 20gal. and I think the other holds 16gal. Not 100% sure. Also, If I'm not mistaken I read on our forum they are the same tanks but the has something to do with the internal that will only allow you to put 16 gal. in the so called smaller tank. On this I am not 100% positive if I am remembering this correctly. Maybe someone that knows more about it will speak up and fill us in better.

They came with either a 13 gal or 20 gal tank.

Sound like the gauge or sender on the '94 was a bit off. Probably a 20 gal. tank.

It's probly a 20 gal. Gauges just off a little.

I was thinking the other way around. Someone told me once when you are right on "E" there's usually 3 gallons or so actually left in an XJ.


I have to let it run that low LOL. It's a sickness of mine

That is a good way to trash your fuel pump. The fuel is what keeps it from over heating and burning out.

I guess I've been lucky in that area. I've put about 500,000 miles on vehicles I've owned in my life but a fuel pump is the one thing I've never had go up. A bunch of alternators, starters, water pumps etc but never a fuel pump

All cherokees have the same size tanks. It turns out that the vent tube is different in some of the models. If you raise the vent tube you can get more fuel for those of us only filling up to 16 gallons or so. Cherokee tanks are meant to hold 25 gallons, so if you change out the vent tube to just shy the top of the tank (about 1/2" from the top) you should get around 25 gallons in that tank. I have yet to do mine as I am in need of a fuel sender and they are pretty spendy.

The tank will actually hold a little over 25 gallons by trimming the vent tube but you run the risk of overflowing the tank with changes in temperature. Here's a write-up on modifying the vent for more capacity...

You dont trim the vent tube, you add more to the tube with another that has a slight bend or a 90 degree going towards the top of the tank.
