93 cherokee sport 4wd, open diff or limited slip?
I was just curious as I got my cheep stuck the other day, and power always seemed to go to wheel with least resistance, (both front and rear) so one side in front and back would just spin while other side just sat still. I believe I have a 8 1/4 in the back (not 100% sure) and the typical diff in front. I figured they would be limited slip or something like it as they call for friction modifier in both front and rear diff, but the way the side with least friction would just spin like crazy got me wondering, is it possible I have open diff's, or are the clutches in my diff (if it has them) just worn and in need of rebuild.

What called for friction modified fluid? The manual?
For what it's worth, my 94 Sport has an open diff, and the manual does not call for FM fluid. Well... it says to use it if you have an LSD, but I don't.
Could be wrong, but I believe LSD was just a factory option. Not all of them have it.

I also have a 94 with an 8.25 and its an open rear (99% of them came like this) Unless you have a tow or police package its probably open. If you do have a limited slip and its not working you may want to open the rears up and look for clutch packs then put the friction modifier in there and see if it comes back to life if not its time to replace them...Tj

I was just looking at generic haynes manual, I guess it does say (with limited slip-all models) so I misinterpreted it. How can I tell it has towing package, it has what looks to be a class 2 hitch on it, but I guess I would probabl;y have to open diff cover to tell?

Lift both rear wheels off the ground at the same time. If you have any kind of traction enhanced rear diff (lsd, locker, etc.), both wheels will turn the same direction when only one is rotated by hand. If the wheels turn opposite of each other, the diff is open style (most common). Works same way on the front axle. Friction modifier additive does nothing to improve the grip of the clutch-pac (lsd diff), it allows the clutches to slip easier, for smoother performance while turning.
