93 cherokee heat gauge question

Hey Just bought my first Jeep got a 93 Cherokee xj 4.0. Everything is working perfect except for the heat gauge, Being new to these vehicles have no idea where to start looking, where is the sensor located? How would I go about just wiring up an aftermarket gauge? Any diagrams or pictures would be a great help.
Thanks.

One sensor is on the t-stat housing at the front of the engine, and you could have one on the head near the rear drivers side. My 91 has both and both can be replaced easily. You could use a volt meter to test if the sensors are bad and if they aren't test the connectors and go from there. Chiltons has the specs for testing them. I can look in mine and see if it's listed for ya.

I'm not positive on this one but, pretty sure. I, too, have a 91 XJ. I believe the temp. sensor on the T-stat housing is for the aux. fan and the temp. sensor on the driver's side rear of the head is the sending unit for your gauge. OKC, is that right??

You are 100% correct but at some point the rear sender was removed and they used the sensor on the t-stat housing for both the gauge and the aux fan. I just don't know if it is 93 or 94 when that happened.
