'92 XJ...last leg?
My '92 XJ has over 180,000 miles on it and there is a "rattle" coming from the motor when it is idling. If I put it in Drive, the noises decreases, but it doesn't go away until load is actually placed on the motor ie. accelerating. Not sure what is going on, but I figured I could get some input here. Not ready to retire her yet, but I also don't want to put a ton of money into it since it is just my DD.

You might have a broken flexplate if it is an automatic. There was a Chrysler TSB out for 4.0 engine noise put out years ago, it was caused by the type of coating on the pistons, but was not any real concern as far as abnormal wear or engine failure.

You might just need a valve job. They'll get loose and sloppy over time and your rockers will make noise. Try adding some Lucas Oil Stabilizer for now.

maybe the bolts on the torque converter backed out a little? does it sound like a light rod knock? the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel had backed out on our 95 and it sounded like rod knock so we replaced the bearings. after doing that, it still knocked so we pulled the inspection plate off the tranny to see the bolts backed out and all of them had rub marks from hitting something
