92 XJ key troubles.

92 XJ 4.0 auto 4x4 2xx,xxx miles.

This is not my Jeep. It is my brother laws.

He got this Jeep over a year ago. The key broke off in the switch at some point. He was still able to turn and crank it easly so he didn't fix it (against my advice).

Of course...him & my sister and their family start on vacation in his Jeep and her van. Of course...half way there they stop at a store and his Jeep will not crank back. (I was not there at this time)

He says, the key was stuck in the on position and wouldn't turn to off or start to turn over. He tried raking the dash down and was going to hot wore it but didn't cut no wires because he didn't know what he was doing.

He eventually was able to take a screw driver and was turned it hard enough to pop from on to start and got it back going. So now they are 4+ hours from home (I rode down too). It seems to be cranking OK with the screw driver for now.

If it would stop cranking again but he was able to get it to the on position he should be able to send power to the starter and it should fire up, correct? And what's the best way to do this?

I am asking this for them so they don't get in a bad...worse....situation at time to leave or on the way home.
