91 XJ running HOT!!!!!
I've read all the posts and with all of the different opinions am just about ready to bag it. One last try with as much detail as I can.
91 XJ 4.0 HO. 202,000 mi. New radiator, water pump, thermostat, belts, hoses, coolant temp. sending unit and last but not least new clutch fan.
As long as I have the defrost on (temp set to cool) will run at 210* all day. 65 or sitting in traffic does not matter. If I turn off the defrost, temp will start to climb untill 235* (Now I am assuming that it is at 235* because straight up is 210* and 260* is as hot as the guage goes.) At 235* the electric fan will kick on and cool her down to 210* and the process starts over.
The electric fan runs with the defrost on. The electric fan runs with the coolant temp sending unit disconnected.
Is there a temp sending unit for the fan? If so, Where?
If I don't figure this out soon I will be driving around with the defrost on forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

The switch for the electric fan is on the tstat housing,it should start the fan at 217 degrees,235 is to hot,it is possible you have the wrong switch or a bad one. Your electric fan comes on with the ac also.

I have the renix but I've been told its normal for them to cycle between 210 and 225 where the electric fan kicks on.
If its comming on late, you might look at the temp switch.

Update
Well I believe the mystery has been solved. The "overheating " problem was being caused by a bad cooling temperature sensor. The one in the thermostat housing. It was able to tell the computer everything it needed to know for air/fuel mix but it would not trigger the fan untill it was too hot. Replaced it with another O.E.M. brand and had the same results. So I spent the extra $7.00 and put in a Wells. Problem solved. Fan comes on at aproximatly 215* and cools her down to 200* lickity split. Thank you all at Jeep Cherokee Forum for your help and support. God Bless.

yes but yours will be located on the driver side of the radiator on the tank.

You have to feel sorry for people who thought they were buying a reliable low maintenance vehicle when they purchased their Cherokee...............um, like me

I have worked on Fords since I was 14. I am 46. I still have the 71 F100 my dad bought new and gave to me at 15. It is my daily driver and I know just about all there is to know about it as far as things breaking.
I just got this 90 Jeep Cherokee Laredo from my sister. It is nowhere as easy to work on as the 71 F100 but SO much easier than my daughter's 96 Mustang or son's 2002 Focus.
The more I learn about this Jeep the more I like it. It is one tough, compact little truck with gobs of torque.
I had to sell my 86 Bronco to pay for my daughter's college tuition. We make too much money to get any grants. Sure wish I had that kind of money. Don't know how we are going to eat most weeks after the bills.
Then I got this Jeep from my sister for some work I did on her house so she can sell it before she looses it. The family house at that.
This jeep will fill the void.
Sorry for the book. Couple of beers and I spill the beans. lol
