91 Jeep XJ speedo
I recently bought an XJ. The Speedo didn't work since I had it and was parked for 7 years before I bought it. Replaced a few things now everything works except Speedo/odometer. I have replaced VSS, checked the plastic gear and felt the metal one in tcase, traced wires all the way to the fire wall, bought a junkyard gauge cluster (same problem), checked all conections and still nothing. Is it a lost cause? Bite the bullet and drop it off at mechanic? Something I'm missing? 91, 4.0, auto, 4x4, 231J, electric speedo. Thank you.

Stupid question, but when you say "traced wires" do you mean you checked continuity or did you visually check the wires for damage?
Have you checked the wire continuity on the harness itself?
Have you made sure the harness that clips into the speedo actually contacts properly? It's been a few months since I pulled my gauge cluster.. but I recall two harnesses that plug into the cluster. There is one with sort of spring loaded contacts that plugs into the back of the entire cluster (like, it contacts with the film that's on the back of the cluster). That lights up the lights and panels. Then there is the electric speedo one, which I think was just straight pins going into the connector (so you don't have to bend the clips more to make them contact). I do remember the harnesses being corroded a bit and I had to polish the pins with a scotchbrite pad to get a good contact though.
