90 xj will not downshift

90 xj will not downshift.

I did the cable adjustment procedure but still not luck.

I replaced the valve cover gasket and in the process I had to force the cable out of the way. That's when it stopped downshifting.

Is is possible that by moving the cable I dislodged the cable attachment in the transmission?

If you pull on the cable does it retract on it's own?

Yes, when I pull on the cable and let go it springs back.

That cable has NOTHING to do with shifting, only the line pressure in the trans.

The tPS on the other hand does affect shifting.

Give us some more details on how the trans is acting please.

Did you adjust that TPS when you installed it?

Yes.

What I didn't mention above is that I degreased the motor prior to changing the valve cover gasket.

The degreaser coupled with high pressure water spray must have killed it.

The connectors must have had moisture in them causing a short when I started the motor.

TPSs hate water.
