90 cherokee not charging

90 cherokee not charging
My son has a 90 jeep Cherokee with new alternator that will not charge unless you run a wire from Battery to one of small wires on back of alternator any ideas what will cause this ? Could it be the ecm ?

This year is not controlled by ecm. Is plug making good contact?

One of those small wires is a Hot from the ignition switch.
