89 xj chatter

Hey guys my first post hopefully someone can help me ...I have a 89 xj 4x4 I bought dirt cheap as a little project and that it is! I'm swapping my rear end because my pinion was bad, heard it was easier to just swap....but when I got it she had a rough idle I then found from here that my vacuum line from tb to map sensor was broke and that cleared it up 100 % now if I nail the gas it wants to stall and then will catch up it doesn't really die by if I just ease on gas it Wil rap up no problem and hesistation....my last problem is right when it starts up there's a 2 to 3 second chatter and will stop completely but if I tack it up to about 2500rpm it will start chattering again it's not very loud but I can easily hear it from.driver seat I have since then pulled my head off and replacing it along with new lifters I'm worried I'm doing all this and will still have same noise I kinda wanted to check all possibilitys while my head is off, Thank you guys so much for your time sorry this was so long

Welcome Spud. Loose the Fram filter and.....how many miles?...I don't put sewing machine oil in mine...

Fuel injectors make a clicking noise too so you may want to check that. Or maybe try a thicker oil like rotella t6

Thanks for the quick responses, I will get a different filter as you stated. What do you recondmend? It's got 180k miles hasn't been inspected since 2010 it was sitting a while but I don't think the whole 6 years of its last inspection I'm also getting some white smoke when I hit the gas a little at idle witch is why I pulled the head in the first place..I changed cap rotor plugs and wires I should have changed the oil but I didn't once I get my new head on I'll put new fluids in it and some thicker oil...

Auto trans?

Could be loose flexplate bolts.

Where is my flexplate? I could swear it's coming from my motor but hopefully I'm wrong ...

Did you click on the link in post 7?

If you have a Napa near by, they sell the gold. which is the Wix. And X 2, Really those bolts (EVERYONE!) should be checked. Trouble there is as common as a hardened oil filter adapter O ring, (almost).

I haven't checked mine. I need to

I'm going to switch my filter like you guys said I just polished my pistons and such up, now I'm just waiting on the funds for my new head. In the meantime I'm switching out the rear end it should be here Tuesday I started taking old one out everything started going good but my parking break lines I don't see how to disconnect them it's like it goes into hub and turns a spring I even disassembled the hub and can't see how they disconnect .....do I have to have them? If I was to cut them would my regular breaks work still and just not have the parking? Thank you again guys

From inside the backing plate, squeeze the tabs on the cable housing to remove it.

It can be pretty hard. I think I tried using a small hose clamp to squeeze them in once.
