Default 89' tranny problems

i have a 1989 jeep Cherokee and the tranny first off wouldnt shift by itself or go into passing gear i had to go into first then move up the column witch didnt really bother me.. than now it wont even shift into first or reverse without giving it a little gas like feathering it until it pops in.. what could this be? is there some sensor? because also when u first start up the jeep the motor will rev up a little high and wont stop unless you shut off the jeep and restart it. you can go up hills and the tranny will hold the gear but coming down the hill its as if it is in neutral?

Your throttle positon sensor is probably bad on the engine side. That's the idle flare.
How's the trans fluid level and condition?
Have you ever changed it?

could that cause the tranny to act up and not shift? it is a used tranny i had somone put up there and it ran fine for a while... And the tranny fluid is bright red, do you think that with just a new trans filter and new fluid would do it? i never even put the tranny under any kind of torque wheeling or towing either

hmmmm... well the jeeps been parked for like three weeks but it was installed like 3 weeks before that and i always checked the fluids every other day. looking at the bolts on the tranny pan i dont think he changed the filter i only know that he drained it and replaced fluid.
