Default '89 to '97 4.0 motor swap

Hey guys, I am new to the forum. On my 5th Jeep though and a '95 Grand Cherokee was my first vehicle. Anyways, I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee with the AW4 transmission and (had) the 4.0 inline 6 motor in it. The motor had 278,000 and finally went bad on me last week. A buddy of mine has a '97 motor and said I can swap it into my Jeep pretty easily.

Has anyone done this? What do I need to look out for? He said '97 was the last year the motors had a distributor so I can swap it in pretty easily. Will I have to change the wiring or can I leave the '89 wiring? I think he said I would have to use the flex plate of my '89 motor which is fine if I can do so.

Just wondering what I need to do in order to do this swap right and if it is even worth it?

Any help or advice is great!

Thanks!

-Chris

your 89 is a renix motor and the 97 is a HO... the head is ported diff...so you will have to swap a ton of stuff to make it work... search renix to HO swap...

2000 and 2001 XJ 4.0s had a distributorless ignition. They are fired by a coil pack.

The same reason that FrankZ and Endlessmountainfab keep calling me out on incorrect info. Because we gotta learn it somewhere. Knowing is half the battle.
