88 XJ fuel cutoff
 
Where is the fuel cutoff safety switch for an 88 XJ? I'm not getting power back to the fuel pump. I've traced out the wires from the fuel pump to under the dash where they go into the wiring harness. I don't want to pull the wiring harness apart to trace the wire back further (especially since I believe it simply goes to the fuse block). Since I don't have power to the fuel pump I'm hoping the fuel cutoff switch somehow was tripped and will solve my problem. If not, I'm wide open to suggestions to where the problem(s) may be.

Try the fuel pump relay located on the passenger side front wheelwell under the hood. There is a bank of 3 to 5 relays. one is the fuel pump relay. Don't thing there is a safety switch like you described.

X2 on the relay..

2nd guess would be the Ballast resistor on the fender behind the airbox.

An 88 has no fuel cutoff switch...

X3 on the relay, they are known for going out.

Thanks for the input. So far I've acquired a new relay and tried installing it in each of the four positions that currently have relays in them. I've also ohmed the ballast resistor and it ohms at 1.3. The resistor itself is stamped 1.1 ohm so that is good. My problem hasn't changed. I still don't have voltage at the pump. Any other suggestions for an easy fix before I start tracing out individual wires?

Here's an update to the saga. When the ignition is turned on, the relay engages for about a second. It then resets for some reason. I've been under the Jeep with my trusty multimeter and I do indeed have 12VDC at the connector to the fuel pump when the relay is engaged. The 12VDC goes away as soon as the relay resets. I'm using schematics at autozone.com and I don't see anything that would be causing this problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

Well you have the classic case of the locked up pump IMO. The pump has probably sucked up something and has it caught in the rotors thus causing an overload which resets the relay instead of burning up your pump. You have no choice except to pull the pump. You can hot wire it so that will try to force the debris through the rotors but may also overheat the pump which may make your Jeep a bomb, literally.

I'm checking at the connector to the fuel pump with the pump disconnected. Since the pump is disconnected, it's not trying to turn so it's not the pump causing the relay to reset. If you have other suggestions, please keep them coming since I'm currently stumped.:dunno:

well it will run for about 30 sec and the pump shuts off and wont come back on for hours and somtimes a couple of days i have replced the relays filter and pump

Hey what's up I'm haveing kinda the same problem in my 88 Cherokee it will start and run great for 30 to 40 sec then dies. I have replaced the pump, filter and regulator can't figure it out!
