87 XJ inside trans switch

I noticed that my new to me 87 xj has a toggle switch that switches the tranny to power or comfort mode located on the dash. I quickly realized that the switch was broken. After I took it off I noticed that there is a module of some kind behind it with a light on it but it isnt connected to the toggle part of the switch. Is this a piece that I could pick up somewhere that should be hooked up? Makes sense to be hooked up but would like your opinions.

Thank you

I would fix it but I also hate broken things. lol Junk yard maby. Im sure you can find one. They came in 87-91ish not 100% sure but only for a few years. It controls comfort or power shifting.

Do you have it in yours? Do you see a difference when you use it? I hate broken things too so I will fix it for sure. lol

Replace it, put the switch in the "power" position, then leave it alone.

Yes I do. There is a thread about it and what the difference is between power and confort. Power is said to save the tranny by working the clutchs faster and comfort wears them out faster. I do see a shift point difference in mine but nothing really huge. I would say drive in power. But eother or ots all up to you

Cool thank you. I will do that for sure. Looking forward to it to say the least

Well its always a good and fun thing to fix and work on jeep. I guess whats why we all have one

Since I have the actual modulator thing that is behind the toggle switch, I can just pick a new switch and hook it on right?

Any idea? Hopefully I can just tell by pulling off one from another XJ and going from there...

I have a 91 XJ with the trans switch and dont notice a diference if it shifts faster or harder but I do notice that it will shift at dif. RPMs though. With the power setting on, the trans will shift at higher RPMs and stays in the gears longer. This is great on the highway. Go to the junk yard and get the whole unit and switch for 5 bucks.

Power Comfort Switch

At what RPM does it change gears. I think mine might be stuck on or something. The trans shifts at about 4100rpm. Is that normal? What rpm does yours shift at when you turn it on?

flexin91xj Feb 5, 2010 01:11 AM

It depends on how much throtle Im giving it. At full throtle, mine shifts at 5100 RPMs on both settings. If Im driving conservatively(normal throtle) the trans will shift at higher RPMs with the power setting on. I dont know the exact number, but it does stay in gear 400-600 RPMs(estiment) longer than it would if it was in the comfort setting. And its a big diference when Im on the highway. I would constanty be on the throtle when on the highway in comfort mode. I use the comfort mode around town and always use the power setting on the highway.
Hope that helps...

If you romp the throttle you will notice it down shift and then it will up shift a little earlier. Nothing to really worry about....I hardly ever use it because unless you are really hard on the throttle you will not really notice a difference.

power trans

Hello
From the other side of the globe in my stock 95 xj : it will hold the gears longer (to the red line) if you boot it, general run in a lower gear than normal (great for twist uphill action) and if you put your foot in it it it drops the gear much faster(better overtaking). There is a price mega increase in fuel consumption with power stitched on I get 300-350Km (185- 220 miles) on a tank switch power off and I get 550-650km (340-410 miles) needless to say I am selective in when I use it.
