Default 87 Cherokee 4.0 I6 runs like bad 4 cylinder?

I have owned this Cherokee for the last 6 months, it was owned by two different elderly men in the past and only has 63K original miles on it. When I purchased it, it had been sitting for about two years. I got it up and running in no time, also changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, cleaned throttle body, idle stepper, used several cans of different brand injector cleaners through the gas and used Cruiser 54's list of items to check almost his entire list of things to do on Renix Cherokees. I also tested the Cat with a vacuum gauge as per directions from this forum, yesterday I checked the compression on every cylinder and they were between 158-163. But still this Jeep runs like a bad 4 cylinder, terrible acceleration! it idles perfect and runs very smooth throughout the entire power range but very SLOW for a 6 cylinder. Going up a hill from a dead stop, forget about it, feels like your towing a 5000 pound trailer behind, and yes I checked all the brakes and drums and nothing is dragging and all wheels spin freely when up in the air. Any ideas on what I am missing or is this how they all run and just live with it?

How is it shifting? Does it feel like it's starting out in to high of a gear. Does it react differently if you manually shift?

It shifts fine, starts out in low gear and yes it is automatic, forgot to mention. I have not tried to shift manually, dont think it would matter its so slow in first gear also.

Mines an 89' with 235K on it and it'll light the tires up with ease. So no they should not feel like 4 banger. If your driving along and stomp on the gas does it down shift correctly? And idea on gas mileage? Does it have enough power to do a break stand or does it just fall on it's face?

Time to do a fuel pressure test.

And, of course, the things in posts #1 through 4 in my pink link.

Black89, I couldnt spin the tires if I put oil under them, seriously it is terribly slow out of the hole, it runs ok at highway speed, if your crusing at 65 and hit the gas it seems normal, not sure about how it downshifts at that speed, have to check. Im positive that this vehicle would not do a brake stand, guess I have to try to find out..

Crusier, I have done 1-4 on your list along with several other things...I want to personaly thank you for all your input and valued information on here! I did resolve my overheating issue thanks to you (Napa Cap) and tighten all connections several times. I am planning on checking fuel pressure tonight, (the fuel pump been whining for awhile)

As Cruiser mentioned check fuel pressure and you may want to check your injectors as well. Maybe even upgrade them. I'm running the Ford injectors in mine. (Ones used in the Taurus 3.8 V6's).
